Step 1: Look for the harness release lever on the back of the car seat, near the top of the seat. Step 2: Pull the lever towards the front of the car seat to release the harness. Step 3: Check that the harness is fully released by pulling on the straps. If they don’t move, the harness is detached.

How to check if your car seat has been affected. To check whether your seat needs to be exchanged you need to find the product serial number. This is located on the front of the car seat, underneath the cover. Britax Römer explain how to remove the cover in the picture below.
I had the same frustration with the Britax. It finally occurred to me to take a decent, fairly heavy duty pair of pliers and use the pliers to turn the circle button that opens the car seat to open the seat. It really helped having that extra leverage from the pliers. Good luck! (And there has to be a better designed car seat than this one.)
